'More activity' is an admission of defeat

Sep 01, 2026 2 min read

The quarter is lagging, the pipeline is thin, and in the sales meeting the sentence drops that always drops: we need more activity. More calls, more emails, more touchpoints. Sounds like leadership. It’s actually the admission that nobody knows where things are really stuck.

Because “more” is only the answer when volume is the bottleneck. And that can be checked, in twenty minutes, with data that’s already sitting in the system. How many calls lead to conversations? How many conversations to meetings, how many meetings to opportunities? If conversion breaks at one point, say a two percent reply rate on outbound emails, then more volume scales exactly that break. 200 calls to the wrong list are worse than 40 to the right one, and not slightly worse, but doubly so: less result per hour, plus a burned market that will be even harder to reach on the next attempt.

The mechanics behind this are banal and get ignored constantly anyway. A funnel multiplies rates. Whoever ignores the weakest rate and pours more into the top instead pays for every downstream weakness with it. The rep pushed to 60 dials a day stops researching, because research doesn’t produce dials. The list gets broader, the fit worse, the connect rate drops, and management responds with even more activity targets. A downward spiral with a dashboard.

What’s interesting is why the reflex is so stubborn. Activity is the only variable that can be steered instantly by decree. Improving conversion means: sharpen the ICP, rebuild lists, test messaging, maybe admit the segment doesn’t carry. That takes weeks and has no culprit. “More calls” has a culprit, namely the rep, and delivers a green bar by tomorrow. That the bar has nothing to do with revenue only becomes apparent at quarter’s end, and then the answer is, once again: more activity.

Yet the order would be so simple. First look at the conversion chain and find the one spot where it actually breaks. Fix that. And only once every stage carries, turn up the volume, because then, and only then, is more actually more.

If your sales management knows only one lever, you don’t have an activity problem. You have a diagnosis problem.

Ready for numbers you don’t have to double‑check?

Five days from now you could be holding a clear, prioritised fix-list for your revenue stack, priced in euros, not estimates.
