Step 3 of 7, and the recipient knows it

Aug 28, 2026 2 min read

“Just wanted to bump this to the top of your inbox.” Read that sentence and say honestly what you see. Exactly. Step 3 of 7, template from the sequencing tool, row 847 of a list. Your prospect sees the same thing, because he’ll get this email thirty more times this week, from thirty different senders, in nearly identical wording.

That’s the real problem with sequences: the market has memorized them. The patterns are so widespread that every decision maker has the tells in their bloodstream. The reference to your own unread email. The “quick” follow-up. The breakup step with “I’ll go ahead and close the file.” What once passed as persistence now reads as a signal: no human thought about this, a machine is running, and it doesn’t care about you.

Worst of all is the bump email. “Just checking in, in case my last email got buried.” By definition, this email contains zero new value, its only content is a reminder of an email the recipient deliberately ignored. It says: I have nothing new, but my tool says it’s Tuesday. On paper, bumps do pull replies, yes, but look at the replies. “Not interested” and spam flags dominate, and every spam flag charges against your domain. Whatever the bump email gains in short-term replies, it pays for in long-term deliverability.

The way out is uncomfortable because it sounds like work: fewer steps, more substance per step. Three emails, each of which can stand on its own, beat seven templates that reference each other. Standing on its own means: its own hook, its own observation, its own reason why this particular company, right now. The job posting for the third SDR. The tech-stack switch you can see from the outside. The new office location.

Does that scale? Partially, and the partial part is the interesting one. Signals like job posts, funding, or tool switches can be collected automatically, enrichment tools deliver them free of charge. What can’t be automated is the one sentence that tells the recipient a human spent three minutes thinking. Those three minutes are your entire differentiation, everything else the other thirty senders have too.

Run the self-test: read your own sequence top to bottom as if you were the recipient. Would you reply to email four? Exactly.
